4
وَإِذَاٱلْعِشَارُعُطِّلَتْ

wa-idhā l-ʿishāru ʿuṭṭilat

when pregnant camels are abandoned,

5
وَإِذَاٱلْوُحُوشُحُشِرَتْ

wa-idhā l-wuḥūshu ḥushirat

when wild beasts are herded together,

6
وَإِذَاٱلْبِحَارُسُجِّرَتْ

wa-idhā l-biḥāru sujjirat

wa-idhā l-nufūsu zuwwijat

when souls are sorted into classes,

8
وَإِذَاٱلْمَوْءُۥدَةُسُئِلَتْ

wa-idhā l-mawūdatu su-ilat

when the baby girl buried alive is asked

9
بِأَىِّذَنۢبٍۢقُتِلَتْ

bi-ayyi dhanbin qutilat

for what sin she was killed,

10
وَإِذَاٱلصُّحُفُنُشِرَتْ

wa-idhā l-ṣuḥufu nushirat

when the records of deeds are spread open,

11
وَإِذَاٱلسَّمَآءُكُشِطَتْ

wa-idhā l-samāu kushiṭat

when the sky is stripped away,

12

when Hell is made to blaze

13
وَإِذَاٱلْجَنَّةُأُزْلِفَتْ

wa-idhā l-janatu uz'lifat

and Paradise brought near:

14
عَلِمَتْنَفْسٌۭمَّآأَحْضَرَتْ

ʿalimat nafsun mā aḥḍarat

then every soul will know what it has brought about.

15
فَلَآأُقْسِمُبِٱلْخُنَّسِ

falā uq'simu bil-khunasi

I swear by the planets

16
ٱلْجَوَارِٱلْكُنَّسِ

al-jawāri l-kunasi

that recede, move, and hide,

17
وَٱلَّيْلِإِذَاعَسْعَسَ

wa-al-layli idhā ʿasʿasa

by the night that descends,

18
وَٱلصُّبْحِإِذَاتَنَفَّسَ

wal-ṣub'ḥi idhā tanaffasa

by the dawn that softly breathes:

19
إِنَّهُۥلَقَوْلُرَسُولٍۢكَرِيمٍۢ

innahu laqawlu rasūlin karīmin

this is the speech of a noble messenger,

20
ذِىقُوَّةٍعِندَذِىٱلْعَرْشِمَكِينٍۢ

dhī quwwatin ʿinda dhī l-ʿarshi makīnin

who possesses great strength and is held in honour by the Lord of the Throne––

21
مُّطَاعٍۢثَمَّأَمِينٍۢ

muṭāʿin thamma amīnin

he is obeyed there and worthy of trust.

22
وَمَاصَاحِبُكُمبِمَجْنُونٍۢ

wamā ṣāḥibukum bimajnūnin

Your companion is not mad:

23
وَلَقَدْرَءَاهُبِٱلْأُفُقِٱلْمُبِينِ

walaqad raāhu bil-ufuqi l-mubīni

he did see him on the clear horizon.

24
وَمَاهُوَعَلَىٱلْغَيْبِبِضَنِينٍۢ

wamā huwa ʿalā l-ghaybi biḍanīnin

He does not withhold what is revealed to him from beyond.

25
وَمَاهُوَبِقَوْلِشَيْطَـٰنٍۢرَّجِيمٍۢ

wamā huwa biqawli shayṭānin rajīmin

This is not the word of an outcast devil.

26
فَأَيْنَتَذْهَبُونَ

fa-ayna tadhhabūna

So where are you [people] going?

27
إِنْهُوَإِلَّاذِكْرٌۭلِّلْعَـٰلَمِينَ

in huwa illā dhik'run lil'ʿālamīna

This is a message for all people;

28
لِمَنشَآءَمِنكُمْأَنيَسْتَقِيمَ

liman shāa minkum an yastaqīma

for those who wish to take the straight path.

29
وَمَاتَشَآءُونَإِلَّآأَنيَشَآءَٱللَّهُرَبُّٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ

wamā tashāūna illā an yashāa l-lahu rabbu l-ʿālamīna

But you will only wish to do so by the will of God, the Lord of all people.
