'Abasa

عبس

He Frowned · 42 آية · مكية

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ

1
عَبَسَوَتَوَلَّىٰٓ

ʿabasa watawallā

He frowned and turned away

2
أَنجَآءَهُٱلْأَعْمَىٰ

an jāahu l-aʿmā

when the blind man came to him––

3
وَمَايُدْرِيكَلَعَلَّهُۥيَزَّكَّىٰٓ

wamā yud'rīka laʿallahu yazzakkā

for all you know, he might have grown in spirit,

4
أَوْيَذَّكَّرُفَتَنفَعَهُٱلذِّكْرَىٰٓ

aw yadhakkaru fatanfaʿahu l-dhik'rā

or taken note of something useful to him.

أَمَّامَنِٱسْتَغْنَىٰ

ammā mani is'taghnā

For the self-satisfied one

6
فَأَنتَلَهُۥتَصَدَّىٰ

fa-anta lahu taṣaddā

you go out of your way––

7
وَمَاعَلَيْكَأَلَّايَزَّكَّىٰ

wamā ʿalayka allā yazzakkā

though you are not to be blamed for his lack of spiritual growth––

8
وَأَمَّامَنجَآءَكَيَسْعَىٰ

wa-ammā man jāaka yasʿā

but from the one who has come to you full of eagerness

9
وَهُوَيَخْشَىٰ

wahuwa yakhshā

and awe

10
فَأَنتَعَنْهُتَلَهَّىٰ

fa-anta ʿanhu talahhā

you allow yourself to be distracted.

11
كَلَّآإِنَّهَاتَذْكِرَةٌۭ

kallā innahā tadhkiratun

No indeed! This [Quran] is a lesson

12
فَمَنشَآءَذَكَرَهُۥ

faman shāa dhakarahu

from which those who wish to be taught should learn,

13
فِىصُحُفٍۢمُّكَرَّمَةٍۢ

fī ṣuḥufin mukarramatin

[written] on honoured,

14
مَّرْفُوعَةٍۢمُّطَهَّرَةٍۭ

marfūʿatin muṭahharatin

exalted, pure pages,

15
بِأَيْدِىسَفَرَةٍۢ

bi-aydī safaratin

by the hands of

16
كِرَامٍۭبَرَرَةٍۢ

kirāmin bararatin

noble and virtuous scribes.

17
قُتِلَٱلْإِنسَـٰنُمَآأَكْفَرَهُۥ

qutila l-insānu mā akfarahu

Woe to man! How ungrateful he is!

18
مِنْأَىِّشَىْءٍخَلَقَهُۥ

min ayyi shayin khalaqahu

From what thing does God create him?

19
مِننُّطْفَةٍخَلَقَهُۥفَقَدَّرَهُۥ

min nuṭ'fatin khalaqahu faqaddarahu

He creates him from a droplet, He proportions him,

20
ثُمَّٱلسَّبِيلَيَسَّرَهُۥ

thumma l-sabīla yassarahu

He makes the way easy for him,

21
ثُمَّأَمَاتَهُۥفَأَقْبَرَهُۥ

thumma amātahu fa-aqbarahu

then He causes him to die and be buried.

22
ثُمَّإِذَاشَآءَأَنشَرَهُۥ

thumma idhā shāa ansharahu

When He wills, He will raise him up again.

23
كَلَّالَمَّايَقْضِمَآأَمَرَهُۥ

kallā lammā yaqḍi mā amarahu

Yet man does not fulfil God’s commands.

24
فَلْيَنظُرِٱلْإِنسَـٰنُإِلَىٰطَعَامِهِۦٓ

falyanẓuri l-insānu ilā ṭaʿāmihi

Let man consider the food he eats!

25
اَنَّاصَبَبْنَاٱلْمَآءَصَبًّۭا

annā ṣababnā l-māa ṣabban

We pour down abundant water

26
ثُمَّشَقَقْنَاٱلْأَرْضَشَقًّۭا

thumma shaqaqnā l-arḍa shaqqan

and cause the soil to split open.

27
فَأَنۢبَتْنَافِيهَاحَبًّۭا

fa-anbatnā fīhā ḥabban

We make grain grow,

28
وَعِنَبًۭاوَقَضْبًۭا

waʿinaban waqaḍban

and vines, fresh vegetation,

29
وَزَيْتُونًۭاوَنَخْلًۭا

wazaytūnan wanakhlan

olive trees, date palms,

30
وَحَدَآئِقَغُلْبًۭا

waḥadāiqa ghul'ban

luscious gardens,

31
وَفَـٰكِهَةًۭوَأَبًّۭا

wafākihatan wa-abban

fruits, and fodder:

32
مَّتَـٰعًۭالَّكُمْوَلِأَنْعَـٰمِكُمْ

matāʿan lakum wali-anʿāmikum

all for you and your livestock to enjoy.

33
فَإِذَاجَآءَتِٱلصَّآخَّةُ

fa-idhā jāati l-ṣākhatu

When the Deafening Blast comes––

34
يَوْمَيَفِرُّٱلْمَرْءُمِنْأَخِيهِ

yawma yafirru l-maru min akhīhi

the Day man will flee from his own brother,

35
وَأُمِّهِۦوَأَبِيهِ

wa-ummihi wa-abīhi

his mother, his father,

36
وَصَـٰحِبَتِهِۦوَبَنِيهِ

waṣāḥibatihi wabanīhi

his wife, his children:

37
لِكُلِّٱمْرِئٍۢمِّنْهُمْيَوْمَئِذٍۢشَأْنٌۭيُغْنِيهِ

likulli im'ri-in min'hum yawma-idhin shanun yugh'nīhi

each of them will be absorbed in concerns of their own on that Day-

38
وُجُوهٌۭيَوْمَئِذٍۢمُّسْفِرَةٌۭ

wujūhun yawma-idhin mus'firatun

on that Day some faces will be beaming,

39
ضَاحِكَةٌۭمُّسْتَبْشِرَةٌۭ

ḍāḥikatun mus'tabshiratun

laughing, and rejoicing,

40
وَوُجُوهٌۭيَوْمَئِذٍعَلَيْهَاغَبَرَةٌۭ

wawujūhun yawma-idhin ʿalayhā ghabaratun

but some faces will be dust-stained

41
تَرْهَقُهَاقَتَرَةٌ

tarhaquhā qataratun

and covered in darkness:

42
أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَهُمُٱلْكَفَرَةُٱلْفَجَرَةُ

ulāika humu l-kafaratu l-fajaratu

those are the disbelievers, the licentious.
