Al-Fajr

الفجر

The Dawn · 30 verses · Meccan

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ

1
وَٱلْفَجْرِ

wal-fajri

By the dawn

2
وَلَيَالٍعَشْرٍۢ

walayālin ʿashrin

And [by] ten nights

3
وَٱلشَّفْعِوَٱلْوَتْرِ

wal-shafʿi wal-watri

And [by] the even [number] and the odd

4
وَٱلَّيْلِإِذَايَسْرِ

wa-al-layli idhā yasri

And [by] the night when it passes,

5
هَلْفِىذَٰلِكَقَسَمٌۭلِّذِىحِجْرٍ

hal fī dhālika qasamun lidhī ḥij'rin

Is there [not] in [all] that an oath [sufficient] for one of perception?

6
أَلَمْتَرَكَيْفَفَعَلَرَبُّكَبِعَادٍ

alam tara kayfa faʿala rabbuka biʿādin

Have you not considered how your Lord dealt with ʿAad -

7
إِرَمَذَاتِٱلْعِمَادِ

irama dhāti l-ʿimādi

[With] Iram - who had lofty pillars,

8
ٱلَّتِىلَمْيُخْلَقْمِثْلُهَافِىٱلْبِلَـٰدِ

allatī lam yukh'laq mith'luhā fī l-bilādi

The likes of whom had never been created in the land?

9
وَثَمُودَٱلَّذِينَجَابُوا۟ٱلصَّخْرَبِٱلْوَادِ

wathamūda alladhīna jābū l-ṣakhra bil-wādi

And [with] Thamūd, who carved out the rocks in the valley?

10
وَفِرْعَوْنَذِىٱلْأَوْتَادِ

wafir'ʿawna dhī l-awtādi

And [with] Pharaoh, owner of the stakes?

11
ٱلَّذِينَطَغَوْا۟فِىٱلْبِلَـٰدِ

alladhīna ṭaghaw fī l-bilādi

[All of] whom oppressed within the lands

12
فَأَكْثَرُوا۟فِيهَاٱلْفَسَادَ

fa-aktharū fīhā l-fasāda

And increased therein the corruption.

13
فَصَبَّعَلَيْهِمْرَبُّكَسَوْطَعَذَابٍ

faṣabba ʿalayhim rabbuka sawṭa ʿadhābin

So your Lord poured upon them a scourge of punishment.

14
إِنَّرَبَّكَلَبِٱلْمِرْصَادِ

inna rabbaka labil-mir'ṣādi

Indeed, your Lord is in observation.

15
فَأَمَّاٱلْإِنسَـٰنُإِذَامَاٱبْتَلَىٰهُرَبُّهُۥفَأَكْرَمَهُۥوَنَعَّمَهُۥفَيَقُولُرَبِّىٓأَكْرَمَنِ

fa-ammā l-insānu idhā mā ib'talāhu rabbuhu fa-akramahu wanaʿʿamahu fayaqūlu rabbī akramani

And as for man, when his Lord tries him and [thus] is generous to him and favors him, he says, "My Lord has honored me."

16
وَأَمَّآإِذَامَاٱبْتَلَىٰهُفَقَدَرَعَلَيْهِرِزْقَهُۥفَيَقُولُرَبِّىٓأَهَـٰنَنِ

wa-ammā idhā mā ib'talāhu faqadara ʿalayhi riz'qahu fayaqūlu rabbī ahānani

But when He tries him and restricts his provision, he says, "My Lord has humiliated me."

17
كَلَّا ۖبَللَّاتُكْرِمُونَٱلْيَتِيمَ

kallā bal lā tuk'rimūna l-yatīma

No! But you do not honor the orphan

18
وَلَاتَحَـٰٓضُّونَعَلَىٰطَعَامِٱلْمِسْكِينِ

walā taḥāḍḍūna ʿalā ṭaʿāmi l-mis'kīni

And you do not encourage one another to feed the poor.

19
وَتَأْكُلُونَٱلتُّرَاثَأَكْلًۭالَّمًّۭا

watakulūna l-turātha aklan lamman

And you consume inheritance, devouring [it] altogether,

20
وَتُحِبُّونَٱلْمَالَحُبًّۭاجَمًّۭا

watuḥibbūna l-māla ḥubban jamman

And you love wealth with immense love.

21
كَلَّآإِذَادُكَّتِٱلْأَرْضُدَكًّۭادَكًّۭا

kallā idhā dukkati l-arḍu dakkan dakkan

No! When the earth has been leveled - pounded and crushed

22
وَجَآءَرَبُّكَوَٱلْمَلَكُصَفًّۭاصَفًّۭا

wajāa rabbuka wal-malaku ṣaffan ṣaffan

And your Lord has come and the angels, rank upon rank,

23
وَجِا۟ىٓءَيَوْمَئِذٍۭبِجَهَنَّمَ ۚيَوْمَئِذٍۢيَتَذَكَّرُٱلْإِنسَـٰنُوَأَنَّىٰلَهُٱلذِّكْرَىٰ

wajīa yawma-idhin bijahannama yawma-idhin yatadhakkaru l-insānu wa-annā lahu l-dhik'rā

And brought [within view], that Day, is Hell - that Day, man will remember, but how [i.e., what good] to him will be the remembrance?

24
يَقُولُيَـٰلَيْتَنِىقَدَّمْتُلِحَيَاتِى

yaqūlu yālaytanī qaddamtu liḥayātī

He will say, "Oh, I wish I had sent ahead [some good] for my life."

25
فَيَوْمَئِذٍۢلَّايُعَذِّبُعَذَابَهُۥٓأَحَدٌۭ

fayawma-idhin lā yuʿadhibu ʿadhābahu aḥadun

So on that Day, none will punish [as severely] as His punishment,

26
وَلَايُوثِقُوَثَاقَهُۥٓأَحَدٌۭ

walā yūthiqu wathāqahu aḥadun

And none will bind [as severely] as His binding [of the evildoers].

27
يَـٰٓأَيَّتُهَاٱلنَّفْسُٱلْمُطْمَئِنَّةُ

yāayyatuhā l-nafsu l-muṭ'ma-inatu

[To the righteous it will be said], "O reassured soul,

28
ٱرْجِعِىٓإِلَىٰرَبِّكِرَاضِيَةًۭمَّرْضِيَّةًۭ

ir'jiʿī ilā rabbiki rāḍiyatan marḍiyyatan

Return to your Lord, well-pleased and pleasing [to Him],

29
فَٱدْخُلِىفِىعِبَـٰدِى

fa-ud'khulī fī ʿibādī

And enter among My [righteous] servants

30
وَٱدْخُلِىجَنَّتِى

wa-ud'khulī jannatī

And enter My Paradise."
